Missionaries to Romania

Hear Dave's Call to Missions (Audio)

Hear Jen's Call to Missions (Audio)

Christ Church has been blessed to have the opportunity to support the Cox family as missionaries to Romania.

Jennifer and Dave Cox have been missionaries to Romania for the past nine years.  The Coxes began their service in Romania by working with other missionaries to develop and grow an infant church in Bucharest.  Then, several years ago, they began planning for a new church plant; it is now three years old and is doing very well with Romanian Christians filling most of the leadership roles. Upon returning to Romania after a year in the US, the Coxes  continue to focus on building the new churches of Romania and developing Romanian leaders for Christ. The Coxes love working with these Romanian Christians and seeing God building His church as He promised in Matthew 16:18.

Jen and Dave are both graduates of Furman University.  After graduation, Dave served in the Peace Corps and was stationed in the Dominican Republic.  He then attended Columbia Bible Seminary in Columbia, SC.  The Coxes later moved to Miami where they served as house parents in a home for unwed mothers. In addition, Dave taught in an adult education program that primarily served Haitian immigrants.  It was during that time in south Florida that they received the call to become missionaries to Romania.  They have three children who attend Bucharest Christian Academy.  Jonathan is entering the 9th grade, Joel the 7th and Emma the 4rd.

BUCHAREST TALES

Easter 2007

We’d like to be the first to wish you a Happy and Blessed Easter.  May the Risen Christ fill your hearts with joy as we celebrate His victory over sin and death on our behalf!

Years ago, we used to include a section in our newsletters called ‘In Case You Wonder . . .”, where we would try to address questions that some of our friends and family might have about why we’re doing what we’re doing with our lives.  We thought we’d have another go at it in this letter.  See what you think!

In Case You Wonder . . .

  • Can you remind us why you’re living over there?

Have you noticed that when people hit their late 30’s or early 40’s, they often start to evaluate what they’ve done with their lives so far—the way they’ve invested their time, money, efforts.  As much as we hate to admit it, we’re there.  Jen turns 38 next week and Dave is heading toward 42!  In our case, we’ve been evaluating our work as missionaries in Romania for the past 11 years.  Before we left America, we tried to write down why we felt we should make this drastic a choice, hoping to help our family understand.  Now, as we think about our reasons back then, we realize (happily) that we are still convinced that we are supposed to be here.

And the core of our conviction is our belief that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.  Our lives have been transformed by His love and power, and we believe that there are many, many people who need the forgiveness, healing, change and purpose that He offers to those who put their trust in Him.  Years ago, for a variety of objective and subjective reasons, we came to the conclusion that Romania was the place where God wanted us to carry this message and live out our faith.  We are not the first to do this, we’ll not be the last, and we realize that there are serious spiritual and physical needs all over this planet, and that we could serve God in other places as well.  But we seem to fit here, and although we don’t know what the future holds, we still believe that this is the corner of the world where we belong.

Important note:  Our email address is now David.Cox@efca.org.  Emails still reach us at the other address, but please make this change when you can.  Also, if you’d like to begin receiving regular email updates from us, just write to the above address and let us know!

What’s Been Happening in Your Corner of the World?

It’s been awhile since we’ve communicated with you the old-fashioned way (you know . . . paper, ink, envelope, stamp), and we have a lot to report about ministry and family.  Since space is limited, we’ve chosen some highlights:

  • Involvement is on the rise at our church (Glad Tidings) with elders and deacons elected early this year, parents organizing care for their little ones during the church service, a new lady named Cora to help Jen with Sunday School for elementary age children (she’s great with crafts, drama, music, dance, anything!) and Jonathan offering (this week) to accompany Jen on the piano with his electric guitar during worship services!
  • Emma turned 10 and Joel turned 13 in the last few weeks.  All our kids are in the double digits and we have two teenagers!  We’ve been having some great family evenings with games,Columbo reruns, Old Time Radio Theatre from ITunes on the computer, or read alouds (Sherlock Holmes and James Herriott,  at the moment).  Truthfully, we’re grateful that we don’t have to shuttle them from football to dance to soccer to baseball, etc.  Life moves at a slower pace here than in America, and we’re not complaining!

             Emma is 10!

  •  Seekers in our midst:  Several new people have been coming to church or meeting with us at home or in the park who seem close to making a commitment to Christ.  Pray for Dan, Christian, Nuti (noo-tsi), Ionut (yo-noots), and Iulian.  We plan to start an Alpha-type course after Easter that is a good tool for introducing people to the claims of Christ, and we hope it will be used by God in their lives and in the lives of others in our church.
  • A team of 12 people is coming this July to help us reach out to the children and parents in our community.  Community Bible Church from High Point, NC, will be sending this team, which is only the third we’ve ever hosted in our 11 years here, so we’re still relative novices.  Pray that God will bless them and us during this time of preparation.
  • Dave has just finished teaching a 10 week course on Christian Morality at a local high school (wouldn’t you like to see that in America!) and dealt with subjects like friendship, relationships with parents, addiction, sexuality, and making choices.  The students are planning to present skits about what they’ve learned to their parents at an upcoming program.  Dave will start teaching the course to another class of students at the school soon.
  • Spring Break is almost here and we will be going to Budapest, Hungary to visit old friends.  After a few days there, Dave and I will leave our kids with our good friends for six days and will travel to Ephesus for a leadership conference during Holy Week.  Living in Europe certainly has its advantages when it comes to traveling to exotic destinations!  Hopefully, our good friends will still be our good friends when we return.

Thank you again for your friendship, support, and prayers.

He is Risen!

Dave and Jen

In a recent news update the Coxes tell of their joy in being Church planters:

Did you ever wonder why church planting is the best job in the world?  Well, Jen and I have been trying to figure that out, and we've finally arrived at the reason: Church planting is as wide and deep as life itself:

BIRTH!
We've welcomed two new babies to our fellowship in the last few months and await a third.  This Sunday is Ana Rebeca will be dedicated and her parents Evelin and Mirela will commit to raising her in the knowledge of Jesus!

MARRIAGE
Jen and I are doing pre-marital counseling with two of our members, Calin and Flori.  They'll be married this summer and are determined to put Christ first right from the beginning!

DEATH
We all miss Doamna Ciresica who passed away earlier this year.  It's sad to drive to church and not stop by and pick her up.

JOY
Seeing believers grow in love and faithfulness. Five men in our small church are joining together to study and then preach through Hebrews.  We're in chapter 5 in the study and chapter 3 in the sermon series and all enjoying the richness of God's Word.  Also on a national level, we've expanded our mission's vision and strategy team to include 3 Romanian leaders for the first time!!

DISAPPOINTMENT

We didn't see any visible fruit from our Easter outreach.  Also, it seems that our newspaper friend Octavian is more interested in knowing Americans than in knowing the Lord... pray for God to open blind eyes in Drumul Taberei!

DANGER
A Romanian friend named David was attacked and robbed this week ending up in the hospital with blows to the head.  Please pray for his recovery and for safety in this big city.

HOPE FOR NEW LIFE
Pray for Jonathan, Joel and me as we meet a lot of new guys playing basketball behind our apartment. We were able to share the gospel with one college student, Ionuts.  He's interested in being at church on Sunday.

So, now you know why we have the best job in the world.  Thanks for helping make it possible for us to live our dream life!
