THE RIGHT REVEREND HENRY I. LOUTTIT, JR., BISHOP-IN-RESIDENCE
The Rt. Rev. Henry I. Louttit, Jr. was born June 13, 1938 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of the South. On June 14, 1962, he was married to Jayne Arledge Northway and they have three grown children and five grandchildren. He was graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1963 and was ordained to the transitional diaconate in June of that year. He was ordained to the priesthood in April, 1964 at Christ Church, Savannah by the Rt. Rev. Albert Rhett Stuart. He served as the Vicar of Trinity Church in Statesboro, Georgia then as the rector of Christ Church, Valdosta where he served from April 1, 1967 until his election to the episcopacy.
Henry I. Louttit, Jr. was consecrated as the ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia on January 21, 1995. He had been elected to succeed the Rt. Rev. Harry W. Shipps on Bishop Shipps’ retirement. Bishop Louttit had long been interested in liturgical renewal and was involved in the creation of the Book of Common Prayer 1979. Bishop Louttit retired as our Diocesan Bishop in January 2010 upon of the consecration of The Rt. Rev. Scott Benhase, Tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia.
In November 0f 2013, in consultation with and approval by Bishop Benhase, the Rector and Vestry of Christ Church asked the Bishop Louttit to serve as Bishop-in-Residence at Church Church.
He and his wife, Jan, bless us each week with their presence in worship. It is our honor to have them as part of Christ Church community. The Louttit’s have three daughters, Amy, Susan, and Katie and are proud of their children, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.
