Virgina Towill Maxwell
Virginia Towill Maxwell died peacefully Saturday evening December 10th surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harriet Dunlap Towill and John Bell Towill, and her husband of 62 years, the Reverend George Motier Maxwell.
She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Towill McNair (Bill); her children: the Reverend George Motier Maxwell, Jr. (Mary Hunter); Mr. John Towill Maxwell; the Very Reverend Anne Meares Maxwell (Bill Hussey); and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
God bestowed upon Virginia a grace that manifested in the many and diverse relationships she had. Her husband George often said of her, “Ginny has more grace in her little finger than I have in my whole body.” To find the Christ in another was not just a faith statement, but a discipline for her, which extended to family, friends, church volunteers, shop clerks, store owners, and most anyone on her downtown walking route. Elegant, yet able to meet others where they were, Virginia loved a good story, a well designed dress, and coffee ice cream. She had a prayer group that stayed together for over 40 years.
Through the years, she organized a school for migrant workers’ children, needle point guilds, a ballet company, Flanney O’Conner workshops, and Christ Church Altar and Lector Guilds. She was as likely to show up at a poetry reading as she was on a float in the MLK Jr. parade or a gala opening. This was usually because she had met “the nicest person who invited me.” She never passed up a trip she could make an adventure. As a long time friend said; “If Virginia told you to hop in the car, you did, because you wouldn’t want to miss it.” She had a gracious smile, a silly sense of humor, and a deep love for her family and her Christ Church Episcopal community.
A celebration of her life will be held 11:00am Friday, December 16, 2022 at Christ Church (Episcopal), 28 Bull Street, Savannah, GA. Memorial gifts may be given to Christ Church (Episcopal), 18 Abercorn St., Savannah GA 31401.
